With the wings of faith and myth
| “Since my Angel is no longer guarding me, can carelessly spread its wings
and the silence of the stars in the two to tear because, of my lonely night,
I should not to hold the anxious hands anymore,
when my Angel no longer watches over me.”
(Rainer Maria Rilke, 1875-1926)
…Wings are angels’ signs. They are a message that angels are near us, around us. They are also a tool, a vehicle. It is the thing that is missing from getting us higher. A symbol, that if we wear them, we will be able to throw away whatever burdens us.
What about you? Have you ever imagined yourself flying? Wearing wings?
In Elephant Design you will find those created by Afrodite Papadouli, the ones that she has imagined, the ones that she has used to fly. But our words are not as important as the artist’s words:
“ After a sudden reversal which occurred in my life last August, I had to challenge myself in order to stand on my feet: to take on things that I had not dared before. I had time on my side, and I had the will to do it!
So, I started sculpting!
I started making angels.
I encountered many obstacles, but the important thing was that I believed that I could do it. I made wings in various ways and sometimes I would wear them. Creating three-dimensional artworks was going over my limit, and that was necessary, as I had to face a new reality. This transcendence led me to angels and wings. Looking back at my work of the past ten years, this was expected, as during this time both angels and mythological winged heroes had found their way into my painting. My belief in angels has been a blessing in my life, one of liberation!
A friend once told me: ‘’When you need to see something, you see it”. Even if this is the truth, I am glad that I need to see the light.
In this exhibition I present artworks mainly from the last three years, focusing on the wings of faith and of myth.” |

After her graduation in 2002, her work evolved rapidly into expressionistic trends with striking colors and strong contrasts. She would break the form quite often and she would choose her subject instinctively.
She has presented her work in more than ten solo exhibitions in Greece, such as:
“Gallery Christina Karella”, 2003 and 2005, “Gallery 7, Athens”, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014, and now at “Elephant Design”,

She has also participated in about twenty group exhibitions in Greece, New York, London, and Florence, from 2000 until today. The main ones took place in Greece: in 2000 at the "Zappeion" after an award on the "Greece and the euro" theme and, the following year, in the exhibition with an award for her participation in the theme "Piraeus-Port-Station". Moreover, she has taken part in the exhibition "Global Artists", in the "Broadway Gallery", in New York in 2012, in three exhibitions of “Art Athina”(2014, -15, -16), at “The Other Art Fair-Truman Brewery” in London in 2020 and recently at “Shoreditch” in London, with the group exhibition of the “Balmain Galleria” and in Florence, at the “Florence Biennale”, 2021.
