The reconstruction of this residence in Kifissia marks a whole new circle of life for the building and its adaptation to meet the requirements of its new owners and the energy-saving standards. It was built in two stages from 1975 to 1990 and is distinctive of a building made of reinforced concrete with horizontal plates, horizontal circulation, and small openings towards the garden. The building’s separation, which exists in horizontal properties, is now abolished, and a single three-storey house is created, with the kitchen and the main living room on the ground floor. The necessary energy upgrade and, at the same time a series of interventions take advantage of the fragmentation of the reinforced concrete structural elements and activate them at specific points.
The newly designed planted space “enters” the ground floor’s interiors through the new big openings. On the first floor's main living space, new partition walls free up the existing floor plan by creating programmatic sub-areas. The existing shared staircase that runs vertically through the building penetrates the first floor with the bedrooms, where an interior view with hidden doors protects the more private areas of the family.
On the second floor, the bioclimatic pergola provides shade, but it also functions symbolically: the view of the green scenery signals the return of outside life. Also, we have made a provision for this floor’s conversion into an independent apartment for the owners' daughter, with its own kitchen and bathroom.
